About the Tan
At Moyle Mink & Tannery we do not use a simple all-purpose tanning agent. Rather, we pick and choose different tanning agents, oils, and finishing practices for their specific attributes and combine them in a fashion yielding the results our customers want. Good tanning is the sum of a lot of small details, and every new species we tan is much like a Rubik's Cube or a new puzzle, it can take years to master. More importantly, however, is to understand the purpose of the tan, which is why we never stop listening to our customers needs. Our philosophy is a process of continuous improvement. The following is what you can expect from Moyle Tanning: Stretch: Our skins will stretch very well.
-
Shaving: Skins are evenly shaved throughout the entire body leaving just enough leather to hold the hair.
-
Pliability: Our skins are completely relaxed. You will not have to fight them. Once you stretch them out, they will not retract. The skin will stay where you want it.
-
Weight: Our skins are remarkably light. Our bison hides probably weigh half what you are used to.
-
Strength: Despite being light, relaxed, and thoroughly shaved, our skins are surprisingly strong and will hold their stitches well. In fact, most of our first time customers are initially concerned with how light and well shaved they are and expect them to tear. However, once they become accustomed to the tan they realize that they do not have to pull on them so hard because they are relaxed and they are strong enough.
-
Clean Hair: We wash and thoroughly clean all skins so they come back to you presentable with bright natural colors. Moreover, long hair animals such as bison, coyotes, Mt. Goats etc… will come back to you clean, fluffy and un-matted as long as they were decent skins to begin with. Naturally, poor skins such as shedding buffalo, skins with cockleburs, and some skins with holes in them will have their problems, but clean skins will come back to you in excellent condition. Due to the clean hair and lightweight pliable nature of Moyle Tanning you will save hours mounting a piece such as a buffalo cape.
-
Shelf Life: Our skins are correctly tanned and have an extended shelf life. If properly stored in a cool dry place you should be able to take one of our skins and re-hydrate it long after tanning without a problem. You can safely soak skins tanned by Moyle Mink and Tannery in plain water for a month without any problem.
Special Services
BrightWhite: Is a process of thoroughly washing, cleaning, bleaching, whitening, and brightening Mt. Goats and Woolly Sheep. These skins will come back to you clean, ready to mount, and will require significantly less combing. Moreover, the bleaching, whitening, and brightening process is highly developed and complete. Meaning you will no longer have to bleach these items yourself before or after mounting. Simply re-hydrate and mount. At present this process is standard at no additional charge with the tanning of the Mt. Goats and Woolly Sheep (which is why they are a bit expensive). Also, you may expect these items to take an additional 30 days to process. Furthermore, 30-day rush service on BriteWhite items may or may not be available depending on the time of year, so please call to be sure. Finally, if you are interested in having us use the BriteWhite process on other types of white skins please contact us and we will let you know if it is possible, the additional charge is 100% the regular tanning cost.
Dye Black: Dyed black skins come out pitch black with a wonderful shine and luster while maintaining stretch and pliability. Moreover, the color is fixed and will not run or wash out. This process is nice for turning Mt. Lions into Black Panthers. This service is available on select items for an additional charge of 100% and may take much longer to process, depending on volume. For more information feel free to call .
